Core Surgical Skills
These workshops will cover a range of core surgical skills accessible to anyone, with no prior experience necessary
Suturing is a core skill that every doctor should be familiar with. This practical workshop will teach delegates the basic suturing skills, including simple interrupted and continuous sutures. Delegates will be able to practise and perfect their suturing skills on high-quality suturing trainers, featuring specially designed synthetic skin, and under close supervision of skilled surgeons. If you have never had the chance to practise suturing before, this is the workshop for you.
Learn about the principles behind knot-tying and how to perform essential knots, including square knots and tying at depth. This is one of the most important skills you can learn, and practice is the best way to improve. This workshop supplements the basic suturing workshop well.
Surgical Airway Management
Hands-on Emergency Surgical Airway practical skill workshop. Come and learn how to do an emergency surgical airway; the “scalpel – bougie – tube” method taught with animal larynxes. Lead by specialist doctors in Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine you will be taught the surgical approach to obtaining a rapid definitive airway via the cricothyroid membrane in emergency scenarios when other options to establish oxygenation and ventilation have failed. The official version of taking a Biro pen to a throat!
Advanced Surgical Skills
These workshops are designed to challenge those with past experience in surgical skills and allow them to take these skills to the next level
Learn how to carry out further suturing techniques, such as sub-cuticular suturing, mattress, and running locked sutures, on swine tissue. If you have previously had minimal suturing experience and have learned some basic suturing before, this is the workshop for you! (Surgeons will revisit the basic principles at the beginning of the workshop incase it’s been a while since you last used your basic suturing skills and will then move on to teach you some more technical skills).
Do you want to know how to fix a torn tendon? Learn how to carry out the Kessler stitch in order to repair porcine tendons under close supervision. This is usually taught at core surgical trainee level, so don’t miss out on this unique undergraduate opportunity! Similar to the advanced suturing workshop, we recommend this workshop to those with previous basic suturing experience.
Vascular surgery comprises some of the most delicate and high-risk operations. In this workshop, you will learn how to carry out end-to-end vascular anastomosis under close supervision. After a brief lecture and demonstration, you will practice on model aortas to provide the optimum suturing experience. Similar to the advanced suturing workshop, we recommend this workshop to those with previous basic suturing experience.
Maxillofacial surgery is a speciality dedicated to treating diseases, injuries and defects of the head and neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions. Join a team of dedicated maxfax surgeons for a plating workshop; a maxfax skill used to treat traumatic fractures.
